Prof. Ivan Đikić, M.D., Ph.D. is a world-renowned Croatian scientist in the field of molecular biology. He is a professor of medicine at the Goethe University Medical Faculty in Frankfurt, Germany, director of the Institute of Biochemistry II (IBC2) in Frankfurt, and one of the three founders of the Frankfurt Cancer Institute (FCI). He graduated and received his doctorate from the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb, Croatia, and received scientific training in laboratories in New York and Sweden.

He has published more than a hundred papers in scientific journals, which have been cited more than 7,100 times. He was admitted to the oldest academy of natural sciences in the world – Leopoldina (German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina).
He is a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), the European Life Science Organization (ELSO), the International Union Against Cancer (UICR), and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

He is the recipient of a number of recognitions and awards. As head of the group for molecular signaling at Goethe University’s Institute of Biochemistry, he discovered in 2004. the mechanism by which the cells of the human body protect themselves from the development of cancer. In December 2005. the magazine “Science” (magazine started by Thomas Alva Edison) of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), published that work as the most significant medical discovery for the previous year. And in 2006. he was first presented with an award from the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), the oldest and most famous scientific organization that fights against this vicious disease, on April 4th in Washington. In July 2006. he received the “Scientist of the Year” award from the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR) in Budapest in Hungary, and the “Glaxo Smith Kline Foundation” for biomedicine award in Munich in Germany. In May 2008. together with his colleagues, he discovered a protein that plays an important role in the development of tumors and diseases of the nervous system. In November 2009. he received the prestigious German “Sir Hans Krebs” award. In February 2010. the German Tumor Association awarded him the “Deutschen Krebspreis”, for achievements in the field of tumor research and treatment. In January 2013. he received the “Ernst Jung Prize” for medicine from the German Foundation. He is one of the few scientists who has been declared the winner of the “scientific Oscar”, a project of the European Research Council (ERC), three times in a row.
